Since its re-establishment in 1847, the Latin Patriarchate has been a pioneer in the fields of education and humanitarian services, establishing its first school in Beit Jala (Palestine) in 1855 and in Salt (Jordan) in 1864. Among its prominent institutions in Jordan is the Our Lady of Peace Center for Persons with Disabilities, located south of the capital, Amman—17 km from the Latin Archbishopric in Sweifieh via the Airport Road and 12 km via Marj Al-Hamam. Follow us here to learn more about the center, its services, and its team, and to stay updated on success stories, educational manuals, awareness resources, and recreational events.
The original concept was to establish a house of prayer in the same area for similar purposes; however, Patriarch Michel Sabbah suggested the name “Our Lady of Peace” to Bishop Selim Sayegh, as it more clearly expresses the spirit of co-existence in Jordan. The foundation stone was blessed by Saint Pope John Paul II on March 21, 2000, during his pilgrimage to the Holy Places.
The Higher Education Committee approved its new name as the American University of Madaba (AUM) in 2011. On May 28, 2013, it was registered by the Higher Education Commission in the State of New Hampshire, USA, as a non-profit institution.
The American University of Madaba was established in Jordan as a private, model American university. It provides a unique opportunity for students to pursue undergraduate and graduate studies in a variety of market-oriented academic programs. The university is recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Jordan and is accredited by the Accreditation and Quality Assurance Commission for Higher Education Institutions.
The university comprises seven distinct schools offering nineteen undergraduate majors and two master’s programs, all taught within a multicultural perspective. The campus features modern classrooms and laboratories and is fully eco-friendly.
The building includes several departments:
Free services for persons with disabilities.
Transitioning Christian-Muslim dialogue from theory and rhetoric to silent, effective action.
Providing a suitable venue for spiritual retreats and youth camps.
The Church of the Good Shepherd.
A dedicated wing for retired priests and bishops.
Free Services for Persons with Disabilities The percentage of persons with disabilities in Jordan exceeds 9% of the population, the majority of whom belong to the middle and lower-income classes and cannot afford the costs of treatment. Consequently, Our Lady of Peace Center provides its services free of charge for the sake of God, relying on Divine Providence and the generosity of benefactors.
The following is an overview of the services provided by the Center across all its branches:
The Main Branch (Amman): Includes the Educational and Counseling Department, Early Intervention Department, Speech and Language Department, Physical and Occupational Therapy Department, Prosthetics and Orthotics Department, and a General Medicine Clinic (in cooperation with Caritas Jordan).
Aqaba Branch: Provides Physical and Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Early Intervention services.
Physical Therapy Units: These units are located in regions across the Kingdom where motor disabilities are prevalent and access to such services is limited, including Fuheis, Zarqa, Mafraq, and Anjara.
